Update

With some ITC out the way been cracking on with the SVR this week. Did a re-evaluation of where I am and what is left to do. Been getting photocopy-happy making my fanzines and preparing to start screen printing my independent magazine tomorrow. Still to come; glossy mag, online mag, quicktime/pdf/issuu versions and experimental 3-D format. Also I've targeted an ideal wall for a wall-zine. Just need to get permission from the owners

My rough first two issuu versions can be seen here.
1.
2.
Haven't uploaded any later work because with them the physical format is a key feature so don't want to ruin it with a digital preview.

Research and experience of formats so far will be posted (properly) in the next few days!

what is a zine?

3/9
A few definitions of a 'zine' from book 'vol.1 zines!'

Alt Cutlure:
“An independent, not-for-profit, self-publication… The name ‘zine’ comes from an abbreviation of the punk-era ‘fanzine’ (itself a corruption of ‘magazine,’ which itself dates from post-war Hollywood).”

Factsheet Five:
“A small handmade amateur publication done purely out of passion, rarely making a profit or breaking even. Sounds like ‘zeen.’”

Weird Flower 6:
“What separates a zine from a magazine is not only budget, but the quirkiness, the individuality, the spirit and yes, even the unavailability that made finding a good read make your day. Maybe this is an overly romantic view, but zines were/shoud be …honest, raw and exciting.”

I like Gym Class Magzines rather crude preview of the current issue. It's sort of saying we know you know how to read a magazine, now lets get on with it

no pressure or anything

"The modern designer must therefore be part printer, part photographer, part coder, part editor, part art worker, part illustrator ...but he or she must be greater than the sum of all these parts. Increasingly, designers must be aware of economic, cultural and technological shifts and emerging trend in different media."

The future of print and digital relationships?

Really interesting article on Eye magazine's website about Colors magazine's relationship with the internet. It talks about using the website to invite unknown creatives from around the world to contribute, fun but nothing new. What is really fun is use of Augmented Reality (AR). "
It allows us to connect the magazine to the website, and to put video on the magazine page. This means we can bring the characters to life – they can tell a story, sing a song, whatever. We used it to add another layer of information, which is behind the magazine, which needs the magazine in order to access it. The obvious thing was video. It means we can have a still photo which starts moving, right on the page. It means we can hear the voice of the person in the photograph. It means they can tell their story in their own words. But you have to start with the physical magazine, because you need a printed code to open this new layer when you hold the magazine spread in front of the webcam "

here is the Colors promotional video clip, some 'homemade' readers versions of their experience is a little more crude, but either way its exciting

"At night I like to hug them and smell their paper and be creepy."

Tutorial

Useful early morning tutorial with Darren today. Started thinking more in-depth about what is the purpose of my research?
to comment on existing online publishing facilities?
to investigate how formats shape our understanding/appreciation/consumption of content?
to challenge preconceptions of the magazine format?
to play with the effects of sympathetic and non-sympathetic formats on content?
to question the influence of art-director/editor on illustrator/journalist?

all of the above??

Wallpaper* Magazine Talk

Martina, Ana and I popped along to a talk organized by the EDO hosted by Wallpaper* Magazine. It was at Pentegram which was an honor in itself. Very interesting talk with lots of comments on the relationship between a magazine's website and printed form and the importance utilizing the tactility of print. Looking forward to rummaging through the library archives for the sticker and UV covers.

Saying that, someone in the audience made a funny comment about how after reading the magazine they want to go and roll in mud, to bring themselves back to earth from the superficial and un-attainable world of beautiful yet ludicrously expensive furniture.
He definitely had a point!

Highlight of the evening was probably meeting some new students and professionals to discuss my report with and harassing Jeremy Leslie in the pub afterwards.

Visionaire Magazine

Visionnaire Magazine take luxury print format experimentation to the limit. Lucky for them they have the financial backing of the fashion big dogs. To buy an issue will set you back at least $250... it is pretty though...

Shift! Magzine

SHIFT! IS EVERYTHING YOU WANT IT TO BE!

Shift! is a publication that could never be reproduced on the internet. It´s tactile, it´s engaging, it is made out of different materials and sometimes even includes sounds and scents.
Shift! isn´t always a book, because it explores the many possibilities of print and other media and thus pushes the limits of publishing.
Shift! is a study, a discussion, results and events. It´s an event not only for the reader but also for a multitude of creatives, because shift! invites photographers, graphic designers, architects, painters, musicians, writers, poets etc. from around the world to create without compromise.
Shift! is a diverse but coherent piece of work, an experimantal project that involves different people and deals with a different subject matter in each publication.
Shift! is totally independent!
